First Meeting

I met Grace Sera, Art Advisor for Children's Hospital of Michigan, Detroit at the Detroit Institute of Art for a lunch meeting to discuss my Service Learning at the hospital.

Grace mentioned that a very important conference is to be held at the hospital in 2012 and that she would like me to assist in completing a few mural projects. The intention is to have the hospital looking its best for the conference. Grace excitedly mentioned that one of the key speakers, Richard Florida had said he would attend the conference.

Grace and I have know each other for many years having met while I worked at Utrecht Art Supplies in downtown Detroit.

I look forward, with great excitement, to a wonderful experience at Children's Hospital.

  2. Second meeting with Grace was at her office next to Children's Hospital on Friday, September 23rd. The mural I am going to be working on is called "Journey Under the Sea." The mural, displayed along a wall near the Emergency Room Entrance, is composed with ceramic tiles and individual glazed ceramic sea creatures that have been permanently attached to the wall. My job is to unite through paint the various elements in the mural, I.E. adding air bubbles, swimming motions, grains of sand for sea bottom, and completing blue line of creatures. West Maple Elementary School and Temple Israel High School students have been working hard on their ceramic pieces. The wall will continue to be filled in with the creations of other school children. The Journey Under the Sea pamphlet states, "Currently the route from the parking garage to the hospital's emergency room is a long sterile corridor. It can appear very frightening to children and their families coming to the hospital. Often times for children, the hospital is a very stressful place." "This colorful and creative art project will brighten up this well traveled path. It will bring art into the lives of sick children and their families, ......"
